ActiWet® Wet Distillers Grains are a premium feed produced at the biorefinery of the Austrian company Agrana in Pischelsdorf as a co-product of bioethanol production from wheat and maize. Wet distillers grains (such as ActiWet) are among the most effective protein supplements for dairy cows, thanks to their combination of high energy and protein value, excellent digestibility, and cost-effectiveness.
They contain around 30–35% protein in dry matter (with more than half being so-called by-pass protein resistant to ruminal degradation), approximately 10% fat, and an energy value of about 8 MJ NEL/kg dry matter – comparable to soybean meal, but often at a significantly lower cost. According to some studies, they can increase milk yield by up to 1 litre per cow per day without reducing milk protein content. Wet distillers grains also have the advantage of moistening the TMR, preventing sorting and ensuring a homogeneous intake of the ration, which supports balanced rumen fermentation and reduces the risk of acidosis.
